Teardown and X/Ray of a Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle Pro Street Tuners 41000008C (This has been Sitting on my shelf for about a year now) + Some others.

The Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle Pro Street Tuner (P/N 41000008C) is Harley’s factory-approved ECM tuning system for many EFI-equipped Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Unlike piggyback fuel controllers, it directly reprograms the motorcycle’s ECM (Engine Control Module) through the diagnostic port.

The HD tuner permanently marries itself to the first motorcycle VIN it flashes (Vin Lock / Marriage). It cannot be reset or transferred to another motorcycle. (So they Say we will Explore this a little further at a later date!) It says this no place on the packaging warning perspective buyers is one and done. it is Buried in an old FAQ Pdf.

Yes, Tuning is repair! Locking down or marring/pairing the tools to 1 specific motorcycle is how the manufactures try and extract more money from owners. Some people own many bikes one should not need to buy one for each bike that’s ridiculous. This is my analysis of this tuner.

What it Does

  • Uploads Harley-approved performance calibrations.
  • Supports Stage I, Stage II, and some more advanced Screamin’ Eagle performance upgrades.
  • Allows adjustment of:
    • Spark timing
    • Volumetric efficiency (fueling)
    • Throttle progressivity
  • Provides diagnostic functions and trouble-code reading.
  • Includes Smart Tune functionality to help optimize fueling.

The 41000008C version fits many pre-2023 Harley models, including:

  • 2014–2022 Sportster (XL)
  • 2007–2017 Dyna
  • 2007–2022 Softail
  • 2007–2022 Touring
  • 2017–2022 Trike
  • Certain XG models (Street 500/750)

IC Chips.
Main MCU is a MC9S12DP512CPVE  Chip Info Package is a  LQFP112
Harley-Davidson Screamin' Eagle Pro Street Tuner 41000008C MCU Chip
This Chip is Supported By My Xeltek 7500 This chip may have the security enabled so it cannot be read. It requires a GX3026 adapter which i do not have if anyone wishes to buy one and send it to me I will remove the chip and attempt the read. I have the mega magic for the the Xeltek GX3026 Adapter Pinouts and could make an adapter when I find the time.

This MCU can also be programmed in system with BDM here is a low Cost USBBDM.

Also the Dataman 48pro2 AKA Elnec Beeprog2 Will Support the MC9S12DP512 Device in ISP Mode.

Xeltek IS01 Supports The MC9S12DP512 Also

These are all common widely available tools the general public can buy form $20.00 to $1,300

I Will attempt the backup of MC9S12DP512. Ill prob do it on a live stream. (Rhine Labs YouTube)  don’t forget to like and subscribe.

My Xeltek 6100N Can Read and Program this Device Requires Xeltek DX4005 Adapter Since I have a mega magic I can use a Standard DFN Adapter I have one in a drawer someplace I looked but I do not have one for this package i have an 8X6 not a 5X6.

Please See Notes on Read-Lockdown. If anyone wishes to have HKLRF drop ship or send in a DX4005 or a  I will be happy to attempt the backup. P2 Appears to be an ISP Header for this device the ELNEC Beeprog 2 (Dataman 48pro2) Support this device but they require credits to use the ISP function.

I could prob use other ISP device programmer I will look in to it when i get the time. I prefer to use the professional programmers I have with known algorithms and proper voltage control vs something mickey mouse.

Update 06/25/2026

I Started with the low hanging fruit and I Removed the 45DB081E Flash Chip (the Empty pads P2 are BDM programming points for the MCU this is confirmed)

Adesto 45DB081E QFN is in the Socket

This process will confirm that this tuner is married to the VIN.

I had some issues at first trying to get a good read and verify keep giving random data, I had to add a 30pf mlc capacitor between SO and GND pins 6 and 7 on the adapter.

What the cap did: It slowed the SO rise time just enough to give the 6100N’s input latch a stable setup time window. The 45DB081E has fast output edges and the 6100N was sampling on the transition rather than after it settled. Xeltek will normally place this note in the device info they did but they put programming not reading.

Yes, I was able to get a Successful backup of the AT45DB081E flash chip.

Buffer is Showing Tuner is Married and the VIN it was married to and Some ASCII Data showing Harley Davidson.

There is a Mystery String at 0xFCAB: 31 48 31 44 4B 45 46 43 35 4D 34 37 34 33 38 30 30 77 36 62  1 H 1 D K E F C 5 M 4 7 4 3 8 0 0 w 6 b Appears to be another Vin????
1H1DKEFC5M4743800 followed by w6b and two non-ASCII bytes (0xA2 0xD9). This is a second VIN appears to be Honda (1H1D WMI prefix, not Harley 1HD). This is almost certainly a test VIN or structure data (0x00 0x01 0x37 0x05 etc.) appears to have no role in the marriage lock.
Harley-Davidson Screamin' Eagle Pro Street Tuner 41000008C Strange Vin Honda?

Lets examine a completely legitimate Repair #RightToRepair scenario, you replaced your own ECM with a used form a salvage yard one and the tuner you own needs to be re-married to the new ECM/VIN or reset so it can marry fresh. There is no way to do this from Harley Davidson it is not even offered.

Based on the memory map form the flash chip, the VIN exists in exactly two locations and nowhere else in the entire 1MB  firmware backup so there are three locations to update?

Offset Content Action
0x0000 VIN (17 bytes) Replace with new VIN or 0XFF
0x0050 VIN copy (17 bytes) Replace with new VIN or 0XFF
0x0040 MARRIAGE SECURED + VIN Clear to 0xFF or update VIN
0x0070 4-byte ECM ID ECM ID

The question is whether there’s a checksum over the header block. The 4 bytes at 0x0070 (2D EF 5A 82) are almost certainly a CRC or checksum covering the VIN and marriage data. If we just change the VIN bytes without updating that value, the tuner firmware will detect the mismatch on boot and likely refuse to operate or re-marry itself. I Will need a few more tuners or one that is not married to explore this and figure out how to give it a proper divorce. So if anyone has a junk tuner instead of scraping it ill be happy to pay for shipping.

Two approaches:

  1. Clear the marriage in the flash entirely: wipe 0x0000 through 0x0074 to 0xFF. This should put the tuner back to an unmarried state so TechLink can re-marry it to the new ECM normally through the official process.
  2. Update the VIN in place: write the new VIN at all three locations and figure out the checksum algorithm if it is there.

Option 1 is cleaner and lower risk. I will need to find a bike to test it on anyone want to donate $5k-$6K (Cash App $slrhine) so I can get custody of a bike to experiment with.

Lets Explore the MCU! (Soon) I been told it duplicated in the MCU also!!

Taking back ownership of your hardware should be in reach of the average joe with basic computer skills. There should be a way to do this In System with a $10 CH341A Programmer with minimal soldering or none at all using a clip. It will take a little bit to develop a SPI algo for the 45DB081E I have some blanks on the way to experiment with.

Anyways, If this Site Helps You, If You Like What You See, and/or You Just Want to Support My Blog Please Donate via Cash App $slrhine

As Time and Funds Allows I will Explore this a Little bit more..

07/08 I Received a couple more Tuners.. The Black and Part Number Gold Part Number 32109-08A, Orange and Black Part Number 32109-08C, Black & White Part Number 41000008C

Of the 3 so far 2 different PCB’s The Orange and Black are the Same PCB Revision will assume the only difference is the Device Descriptors in the Sillabs USB Bridge and Firmware int he Flash the Same Code is engraved in the MCU Date Codes are Different and Marked Copyright 2010.

The device descriptors should be able to be changed using Simplicity studio v5 I have seen this bridge before. So one could have it ID as a Pro Tuner or a Street Tuner.

Here is the Black and Red button on the left they say it’s the older 32109-08C tuner.

07/10 Even More tuners on the way..
07/14 More Tuners Arrived Waiting on More…

There must be a way to communicate and flash the Firmware on this via USB right now it Eludes me at this time. I see it in the manual and the software settings. I just need to figure out how its implemented.
