Terminator 2: Judgment Day on the NES – A Surprisingly Decent Licensed Game

When Terminator 2: Judgment Day hit movie theaters in 1991, I was 14-15 Years old. We had to wait all the way through Christmas to get their hands on a copy, which was published under Acclaim’s LJN subsidiary, a label infamous for churning out painful licensed games that you regretted buying.

Given that reputation, expectations were low. But acclaim managed to put together something that actually worked. The game was flawed, no question, but it held up well enough as a companion to the film. In a fun bit of behind-the-scenes trivia, the unused space in the ROM was filled with hidden text crediting programmer Stephen Ruddy and listing the Software Creations office address in Manchester, a quirky Easter egg buried inside the cartridge. For a licensed NES game from LJN, that might just be the most surprising thing about it.
